Georges' story.

Crocodiles are dangerous animals.

There may be several crocodiles living in Martinique in the "Rivière de la Lézarde".

This is the largest river in Martinique, stretching for almost 36km.
It originates in the carbet peaks and flows into the Caribbean Sea, crossing 7 communes (Le Lamentin -97232-, Saint-Joseph -97212-, Le Robert -97231-, Gros-Morne -97213-, Fort-de-France -97200-, Schœlcher -97233- and Fonds-Saint-Denis -97250-).


One of them, the most famous and probably the first to be observed, has been named Georges.
We've been hearing about it since 2005.
Since the photos taken in 2015, 10 years later, we have been able to observe an individual from this community, often in heavy rain.
There have been several unsuccessful attempts to capture him (drives, sightings from helicopters, drones, cages with bait, etc.).

But what is a crocodile?

A crocodile is a large semi-aquatic reptile from the Crocodylidae family (created by Georges Cuvier in 1807).
The most dangerous species are the marine crocodile and the Nile crocodile, which would include our Martinique specimen.
They can live up to 100 years.

Elsewhere in the world, their survival is threatened by deforestation, pollution and poaching.

These animals, the largest reptiles in the world, are renowned for their prehistoric appearance and predatory behaviour. They have rough, scaly skin, powerful jaws with sharp teeth, long tails and short legs.

Crocodiles live in tropical and subtropical areas, mainly in Africa, Asia, South America and Australia.
They are adapted to aquatic life and are generally found in rivers, lakes, marshes and estuaries.

These predators are carnivores, feeding mainly on fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and sometimes birds.

They use their strength and agility to capture their prey, and are also known for their ambush method of hunting, partially hiding underwater before popping up to attack.

Crocodiles play an essential role in their ecosystem, controlling the populations of certain animal species and facilitating the recycling of nutrients.

They are also revered and respected in certain cultures as symbols of power and longevity.

Our character, once a legend, now a reality, is inspired by this history to share Martinique's culture.
